When we asked where you work out in our Instagram stories, most everyone said HOME! I began this post prior to the recent Kentucky changes due to covid with group fitness and gyms so it is even more relevant!
There are many pros to working out at home including decrease time commitment, not waiting on equipment, workout when you want, etc. Over the past year, I have slowly been transitioning to working out from home and wanted to share what has worked for me and add what has worked for some of our followers as well.
1. A PLAN.
Hope is not a strategy. You need to have a plan for your workouts so you can have what you need and be effective/efficient. No equipment? Develop a body weight program. No cardio machines? Try HIIT workouts or get outside. So, on and so forth…
So how do you find or develop a plan? Easiest, purchase a plan. Since I started home workouts when I was pregnant, I started with 3 strength days with my expecting and empowered workouts (the postpartum guide once little man got here) and performing cardio 2x week. For the EE workouts you only need resistance bands and weights-easy! To begin with I just used a “light” and “heavy” set of weights. For cardio I ran, put my bike on the trainer, did a HIIT circuit, or power walked. (USE CODE LAURENSHAN TO A DISCOUNT)
Other options for plans include programs such as beach body, working with a coach, developing your own, or streaming classes from your favorite local workout studio. I highly suggest taking time to determine what your goals are and finding a plan or someone who can help you achieve them. For instance, the EE workouts aided in my goals to have a healthy, strong pregnancy that prepped my body for all the changes and labor process.

· There are many types of workouts and motivation people look for when starting a journey w/ health and fitness. I started mine at a local barre studio in Louisville. I loved it so much I later on joined their team as an instructor before having our first son. After having him of course things change and my workouts were few and far between and then eventually none. Teaching classes was just not the same as actually doing workouts. I worked a full time job, driving in anywhere in Louisville took for ever, then workout , the drive back home was a lot of time and money. If I needed childcare that was hard to find if my husband wasn’t home. I was stressed, unhappy and overwhelmed knowing I needed to start something , but pushed it off.
When asked to join a virtual challenge group that I could do workouts at home, I laughed off so many times. Finally I said yes to one month and had me hooked. I didn’t have the stress of trying to find the time or the babysitters. It was my time I had priorities and the at home workouts were right there at my finger tips when I could. I think what made me so motivated was the actual community that I never realized was there. The support actually made friendships that are there to this day from four years ago.
I have hosted many virtual challenge groups to this day with other coaches like myself. People that have stress or anxiety of similar situations like I had can join anytime without leaving the comfort of their own home.

2. Building your home gym.
When I began building my gym I started with a treadmill (used-facebook marketplace), bench, 2 sets of dumbbells, and resistance bands. Cardio equipment is an investment so you could always just get outside for walks/runs or purchase a jump rope.
As we chipped away at completing our gym, we purchased trx straps, adjustable dumbbells, and a stationary bike. We chose TRX straps because you can do a full body workout utilizing them and they are also easy to travel with if needed. The adjustable dumbbells were an investment piece but cheaper than purchasing multiple sets of dumbbells. For the bike, we personally chose to get a SCHWINN ic4 bike and utilize the peloton app with it. The bike is wonderful, smooth ride. We have loved the peloton app not only for the spin workouts but the runs and yoga classes as well.
Many studios are also renting out equipment at this time so that is a nice option as well.
I’ve linked several of these items here:
A. Resistance bands
B. Bench

3. Accountability!
Even if you are a self motivated person, during 2020 a little accountability and human encouragement is needed! For myself, I enjoy the expecting and empowered group and challenges to stay on track, as well as, sharing my activity with a few friends via the apple watch. Other fun ideas that came in via social media include
a. Inviting a friend on a zoom workout/live workout
b. Completing a challenge with a friend
c. Having a outside walking date with a friend
As a basic-overachiever momma, I hope this helps bring some simplicity to achieving your workouts or just daily movement into your busy life. What questions, suggestion, ideas do you have?
